Project Description

Thomas Nguyen, a creative professional and avid book collector, approached us with a request to design and build custom built-in shelving and a window reading bench for his newly renovated home office. He wanted something warm, minimal, and practical — a space where function meets craftsmanship without overwhelming the room’s natural light or open feel.

Objectives

  • Design built-in shelving that maximizes wall space while maintaining balance
  • Create a comfortable reading nook with hidden storage beneath the bench
  • Match the wood tone to the existing flooring and desk setup
  • Add fine detailing and precision joinery to elevate the final look

Our Approach

We began by assessing the room’s layout and lighting, then designed a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit with adjustable shelves, integrated LED strip lighting, and open display sections. For the window wall, we crafted a custom bench seat with under-lid storage, soft edges, and seamless trim integration.
We selected sustainably sourced white oak with a matte finish for a natural, timeless look. Orange was introduced subtly through design styling — a rust-colored cushion on the bench, a burnt-orange ceramic planter, and small decorative accents within the shelves.

Results

The final space feels bespoke and elevated — a seamless blend of craftsmanship, comfort, and minimalist design. The built-in carpentry not only added function but also gave the room its focal point. Thomas described it as “the best feature in the house” and has since commissioned additional custom work for other rooms.
